Reflection on the Project プロジェクトのあとがき
When I work on indie projects versus professional productions, the biggest difference is that I usually end up doing almost everything by myself — from planning and development to location scouting and shooting. Back in Hong Kong, I used the label “A Man & A Plot,” which represented everything I offered to clients and, in a way, the core of what I value most in filmmaking.
By the way, the “Man” in the name came from the philosophical sense of “Man is a rational animal” — closer to the ancient Greek anthrōpos or Latin homo, meaning it was intended to be gender-neutral. But after coming to Japan, that nuance didn’t really carry over, and people sometimes assumed I only handled small-scale projects. So eventually, I stopped using the name.
That said, when you’re running a “one-person system,” there are inevitably parts of the filmmaking process where you have to compromise on quality. In the professional world, it can honestly work against you. Even so, the person who shaped my values the most has always been the editor Kyoichi Tsuzuki, whom I’ve admired for years. He does everything on his own — interviewing, shooting, design, project management — relying only on what he sees with his own eyes and what he finds through his own steps. I think it’s precisely because of that approach that he’s been able to uncover the “strange worlds” hidden in ordinary life that no one else notices.
インディーズの案件をやるときと、プロの現場での仕事の一番の違いは、やっぱり企画から制作、ロケハン、撮影まで、ほとんど全部を自分ひとりで回してしまうところなんです。香港にいた頃は「A Man & A Plot」っていう屋号をずっと使っていて、それが自分が依頼者に提供できるもの全部であり、映像制作で一番大事にしている“核”みたいな部分でもありました。ちなみにこの “Man” は哲学でいう “Man is rational animal” の “Man”、つまり古代ギリシャ語の anthrōpos とかラテン語の homo に近い意味で、ジェンダーニュートラルなつもりだったんですけど、日本に来てからはそのニュアンスがなかなか伝わらず、後は「小さい案件しかやらない人」みたいに思われがちで、結局その名前は使わなくなりました。
ただ、この“ひとり体制”だと、どうしても映像のクオリティに関していくつか妥協せざるを得ない部分もあって。プロの撮影を仕事として考えると、正直マイナスに働くことも少なくないです。それでも、自分の価値観を形づくったのは、昔から大好きな編集者・都築響一さんなんですよね。取材から撮影、デザインや進行管理まで全部ひとりでやっていて、自分の足で歩いて、自分の目で見たものだけを信じる。そういうやり方だからこそ、誰も気づかないような日常の「珍世界」を掘り当ててきたんだと思います。
